Piedmont Rare Coins -
1797 Bust Dollar AU-55 NGC
This months coin of the month is a 1797 Small Eagle Draped Bust Dollar in nearly Uncirculated AU-55 NGC quality. 10x6 Stars, Large Letters, BB-71, B-3. When Miss Liberty first appeared in the nations first silver dollar in 1794 she was youthful and vivacious, with her hair flowing freely behind her. Focusing on that feature, collectors refer to these coins as the Flowing Hair type. This specimen of our nations second silver dollar type displays Miss Liberty’s hair in boldly struck detail with only the slightest trace of ware. Walter Breen proposed that this 10x6 star arrangement variety was coined on May and June of 1797, comprising a total delivery of 2,493 silver dollars. This little jewel is surely among the most carefully preserved of them. The pleasing pewter and gunmetal toning are accented by vibrant underlying remaining mint luster and only slight ware indicating claims to a higher grade. A seldom encountered opportunity for the serious collector. Currently offered at $20,000.00
